Some of Brecknock Consulting’s most exciting, challenging and rewarding work has occurred from working with Indigenous artists in remote Indigenous communities. Through working with Queensland Health and the Queensland State Government’s former Art Built-in policy framework, it was possible to commission internationally recognised artist Thancoupie from Weipa to create a permanent public artwork for the Weipa health care facility. This provided local recognition for a cultural and community elder while also fostering a sense of local pride, ownership and involvement. The other public art commission involved a women’s weaving collective, which not only produced permanent works for the foyer space but also involved a mentoring/training program managed by TAFE.
